Blackberry benefits?
by Kelly-Jean Souva

Kelly owns and operates From Mother Nature With Love Sales & Services. Her business is about the people, the land and healthy lifestyles. She strives to create an environment that is educational, functional and beneficial to many, including herself.

Kelly, who didn't have an internet connection at home, recently bought into Blackberry. She spends 5 - 10 hours a week on her gadget - receiving and answering emails, updating her website and facebook.

She definitely finds it helpful for juggling home, business and volunteer activities.

Question: How can social media benefit my business?
Answer by Arina Winkelman

Most have heard about Facebook, or Twitter. Social media refers to a collection of (mostly free) web sites where users post their own content (such as photos), share with others, make comments, ask questions. Users communicate within the site; not necessarily through email. It's easy to do (no tech skills needed), free and fun.

Facebook

A mini web site where a business can post announcements, such as a new employee. Facebook "fans" can make a post to the "page," which others can see. For example, they might greet the new employee.

Twitter

A micro-blogging service where messages (max 140 characters long) are sent out to "followers." For example, a bakery "tweets" its apple pies are ready at 11am ... followers can pick up one (or two!) on their lunch break.

YouTube

A video sharing site. Great to post a video about your business such as demonstrating how you deliver your service or make your product. Watching a video is often more appealing than reading about a product or service!

LinkedIn

Online networking site, generally for business-to-business contacts. It is a way to find, and connect with other professionals. People post jobs; ask for recommendations; share information and advice.

Why Would Businesses Be Interested?

Because on these sites people talk about many things, including the products and services they use. They ask other people what they would recommend. It is an opportunity to hear about what people are saying ... and to respond to both positive and negative comments about their business. Businesses can use it to test beta products, to announce upcoming new products, run a contest, offer discounts, share industry tips and expertise, etc. Because it is person-to-person communication, the corporate brand can be made more "personal."

Should I be using social media?

Just because it seems everyone is doing it, is not a good enough reason. This approach does not work for lemmings or businesses. Do some research. Visit some of the sites. Although they are "free" in terms of cost; a time investment from you is required. Are your customers (or those who could be your customers) hanging out there? Choose one site to join, and give it a try.

Does it replace my business web site?

No. It is a complement to your business site. You can use social media to drive traffic to your web site ... and vice versa. The more links in the web leading to and leading from you, the easier you are to find.
